Sue Ramanathan is Senior Counsel on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee for the Ranking Member, Senator Gary Peters.  A strategic policy advisor with over 15 years of experience as counsel to congressional committees and as a counselor and advisor to principals in the executive branch, she has managed policy teams, formulated and implemented strategy to advance legislative and policy initiatives, and conducted oversight to improve agency performance.  Previous stints on the same committee include service as the Director, Homeland Security Policy/Counsel for Ranking Member, Senator Claire McCaskill and as Counsel to the Chairman, Senator Joseph Lieberman.  

She has also worked in the House of Representatives as the Chief Counsel and Deputy Staff Director of the House Committee on Homeland Security, and Counsel on the House Select Committee on Homeland Security at its inception in 2003.

Ramanathan served at the Department of Homeland Security during the Obama Administration as a Deputy Assistant Secretary and Counselor to the Secretary, and was a member of the Obama Transition Team for the Department of Homeland Security.  Between her time in the House and the Senate, she worked as an analyst at the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

Ramanathan was educated at the Georgetown University Law Center (Master of Laws), Rutgers Law School (Juris Doctor) and Rutgers College (Bachelor of Arts).
