Date: Tuesday, September 24, 2024

Time: 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Location: In Person, Blacksburg Campus, TBD

About the Event

This seminar will be restricted to U.S. Citizens only. Citizenship will be confirmed upon registration, and at the door for walk-ins.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest "open science" laboratory within the US Department of Energy (DOE) system. At its core, however, is an enduring national security mission that hearkens all the way back to the Manhattan Project. In this talk, Virginia Tech alumni Corey Cooke and Seth Hitefield will give an overview of national security work at ORNL, discuss ways for students to get involved in ORNL research, and describe how their career paths ended up at ORNL in the first place.

About the Speakers

Dr. Corey Cooke

Dr. Corey Cooke is the group leader of the RF & Intelligent Systems Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and holds a joint faculty appointment with Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Tennessee Technological University. His research interests lie at the intersection of signal processing, communications theory, and machine learning. His work at ORNL is focused on bringing teams of researchers with diverse backgrounds together to take a concept from theory into a practical prototype.

Dr. Seth Hitefield

Dr. Seth Hitefield is a research scientist in the Computational Systems Engineering and Cybernetics group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Prior to joining ORNL, he earned his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech, where he was a graduate research assistant at the Hume Center for National Security and Technology. At ORNL, Dr. Hitefield’s research includes building software defined infrastructures connecting instruments to high performance computing (HPC) systems, and accelerating signal processing applications on high-performance, heterogeneous, embedded systems. His other research interests include developing simulations for large-scale complex systems, satellite systems, wireless communications, and cyber-security.
