About the Event

The Department of Defense (DoD) is significantly increasing its efforts to address the rapidly growing operational risks associated with cyber-attacks and adverse actions by insiders. The concepts of system assurance and system resilience describe complementary approaches to managing operational risk. System assurance is the justified confidence that a system functions as intended and is free of exploitable vulnerabilities, either intentionally or unintentionally designed or inserted as part of the system at any time during the life cycle. System resilience is the capacity of a system to maintain state awareness, implying a monitoring process, and to proactively restore critical system functions in response to disruption. Assurance is a static property of the system as built, whereas resilience is a dynamic property of the system as designed into a set of behaviors.

This talk will introduce an approach to cyber resilience for cyber-physical systems, including vehicles and weapons systems.

About the Speaker

Peter A. Beling, Ph.D.

Dr. Peter A. Beling is a professor in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech and is director of the Intelligent Systems Division of the Virginia Tech National Security Institute. He has contributed extensively to the development of methodologies and tools for the design and acquisition of cyber resilient military systems. His research interests include topics at the intersection of artificial intelligence and systems engineering. Dr. Beling serves on the Research Council of the Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC), a University Affiliated Research Center for the Department of Defense. Prior to joining Virginia Tech in 2021, he was a professor of systems engineering at the University of Virginia (UVA) and directed the UVA site of the Center for Visual and Decision Informatics, a National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center, and the Adaptive Decision Systems Laboratory. Dr. Beling has served as editor and reviewer for many academic journals and regularly serves as a panel member for the National Academies and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Beling received his Ph.D.in operations research from the University of California at Berkeley.
